WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION / WTO - JAKARTA. Indonesia has won a dispute regarding antidumping duties on fatty alcohol exports with the European Union, based on a World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Appellate Body decision.
The Trade Ministry’s foreign trade director general, Oke Nurman, said in Jakarta on Thursday that the victory would help the product regain its competitiveness in the European Union market.
“The export will be back on fire and obviously it will be in line with WTO regulation,” he said.
In 2011, the EU applied a dumping measure against the fatty alcohol exports, ranging from 45.63 euros to 80.34 euros per metric ton, causing the export to fall 45 percent to only about US$81 million annually in the last five years, according to Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data.
The value of Indonesia’s export of the product reached $148 million before the dumping measure was imposed against Indonesia. The government expects 52 percent annual growth in the product’s export, or worth about $285 million in 2019.
“I hope Indonesian producers and exporters will seize the chance to boost the export and improve their competitiveness in the European market,” said Oke.
