Coca-Cola to invest US$ 63 million in Surabaya

JAKARTA. Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia will soon operate a mega distribution center worth US$ 63 million (Rp 819 billion) in Surabaya. As the most populous country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has become one of Coca-Cola Amatil’s largest markets.

It will be the fourth mega distribution center operated by the subsidiary of Australian-based Coca-Cola Amatil after the Cibitung, Medan and Semarang mega distribution centers.

"The center will start operating in the fourth quarter of this year," President Director Kadir Gunduz said as quoted by Tempo.co on Friday after meeting with the industry minister in Jakarta.

The total investment of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia surpasses US$ 1,5 billion. Recently, the company injected US$ 500 million of capital into Indonesia.

Based on a 2015 financial report from Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd (Australia) on non-alcoholic beverages, sales in Indonesia - along with Papua New Guinea - reached US$ 774,13 million, or 19,8% of the US$ 3,91 billion booked by the company. Sales grew 8,77% compared to 2014.

"Indonesian business delivered solid volume growth and strong market share gains. Economic growth, however, has slowed in Indonesia, which is impacting overall consumer purchasing power," Coca-Cola Amatil group managing director Alison Watkins said.

Meanwhile, sales in Australia reached US$ 2,7 billion. Sales in New Zealand and Fiji contributed 68,46% and 11,72%, respectively, to total sales.
